Devadas Movie Review

✅ Fact Checked

Devadas is an action comedy film starring Nagarjuna Akkineni, Nani, Rashmika Mandanna, and Aakanksha Singh in lead roles. Ashwini Dutt produced it under the Vyjayanthi Movies banner. Sriram Adittya directed the film. Devadas was released worldwide on 27th Sep 2018.

Devadas Story

Deva (Nagarjuna Akkineni) is raised by Dada (Sarathkumar) since he was a kid and they both rule the mafia. The other gangsters form a syndicate to end their rule. They kill Dada and seriously injure Deva. However, Dr. Das (Nani) saves Deva’s life and becomes friends with him. After getting to know each other, Das decides to help Deva with his one-side love. How they transformed each other forms the crux of the story.

Story Analysis

Devadas is a routine story of bromance that relies heavily on entertainment. The first half is decent with character introductions and entertainment. But the second half slows down with unnecessary scenes and poor characterizations. Moreover, the plot is wafer-thin which is sold on the Munnabhai MBBS premise. The characters lack depth and everything seems obvious on screen. Overall, it’s an out-of-the-mill script in every aspect.

Performances

Nagarjuna is superb as a mafia don. His body language and expressions made the character distinct. Moreover, he looks young and it is one of the best roles for him in recent times. Nani has a subtle role that has to express a lot through actions and he nailed it. But Nagarjuna dominated him in most scenes. Rashmika is beautiful and her performance is impressive. Aakanksha Singh is good in her role. However, the actresses don’t have much scope in the film. Vennela Kishore and Naveen Chandra have brief roles.

Technical Analysis

The script is extremely weak and relied solely on entertainment. The production values of Vyjayanthi movies are decent. The cinematography is an asset to the film and all the visuals are rich. The background score by Mani Sharma is good and Two songs are good on screen. The editing could have been better. The direction is disappointing. Sriram Adittya could have come up with a better script for such an intense premise.

Conclusion

Devadas is a regular popcorn entertainer with a weak narration. The story doesn’t offer much but the chemistry between Nagarjuna and Nani, and the entertainment are good. The film has uneven pacing and boring sequences but is enjoyable for a one-time watch.
