Nagarjuna’s Officer is going to be a flop, here’s why

✅ Fact Checked

The latest Telugu movie ‘Officer’ starring Nagarjuna and Myra Sareen in lead roles and directed by Ram Gopal Varma is all set to release on June 1, 2018. While the expectations are already low for the movie in industry circles, read the complete article to know why it could end up as a flop at the box office. Nagarjuna and Ram Gopal Varma have teamed up for Shiva (1990), Antham (1992), and Govinda Govinda (1994) earlier. The first movie in their combination and the debut movie of Ram Gopal Varma, Shiva, has been a path-breaking film and is a commercial blockbuster. But the subsequent movies in their combinations have been disasters and they didn’t team up for 24 years.

Ram Gopal Varma lost his fame in recent times and almost all his latest movies bombed at the box office resulting in both critical and commercial failures. As a result, the expectations of the Officer have been low since the day of the announcement but Ram Gopal Varma has been confident about the film all this time. The first look and teaser confirmed that the story is going to be routine but the execution maybe a little better. The promotional trailers released lowered the expectations on the film as they contain most of the important scenes from beginning to climax of the film and there is nothing special about them. The trailer revealed the plot line which is quite similar to Shiva but this time the conflict is between a Police officer and a mafia don.

The story is loosely based on Daya Nayak, which has been the template for Ram Gopal Varma and his associates for several decades. There are several Hindi and Telugu movies based on the story of Daya Nayak which has dealt with almost all aspects of his career. The Hindi movie Ab Tak Chhappan is based on Daya Nayak’s life, and Telugu movies Golimaar and Siddham are based on the same story. Ram Gopal Varma himself dealt with the story several times himself and the role of Sanjay Dutt in the Department is based on encounters of Mumbai. Apart from Ram Gopal Varma, Puri Jagannadh has an obsession with the story of Daya Nayak, and he has used it in many of his films. There is nothing special we haven’t been told about already.

The production values are too low that Ram Gopal Varma didn’t give any thought to the stardom of Nagarjuna. The visuals are not any better than Shiva which was released 28 years ago. Ram Gopal Varma has made several low-budget films earlier just to prove that nowadays films can be made within a few Lakhs budget but no one expected him to do the same with a star cast. The prolonged shots made with the GoPro camera are looking ridiculous as there is scope to do a lot better. Nevertheless, some of these shots are good and the practical effects used in the film are good. The action and chase scenes have evolved and it can’t save the film without a proper script. The background score and trailer cut are cheap and are below the standards of many low-budget Telugu films. The movie has to survive solely on the screenplay. Overall, Officer is a film that has expectations falling each minute and the movie has a high chance to end up as a flop.
